PE and Sports Premium
DFE VISION FOR THE PRIMARY PE & SPORT PREMIUM
All pupils leave primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
At Thameside Primary, we have worked hard to raise the profile and improve the quality of PE & Sport in the curriculum, both during and beyond the school day. Our work in this area has benefitted from government funding provided to primary schools, in additional to main school funding. Initially the funding was only to be provided for 2013-14 and 2014-15, but since has been extended. Schools receive PE & Sport Premium Funding based on the number of pupils in Years 1 to 6.
We continue to embed a whole school approach to promoting healthy lifestyles and continued professional development.
Our 5 key areas are:
1. The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles.
2. Maintain the high profile of PE and Sport across the school.
3. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and Sport.
4. Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
5. Increased participation in competitive sport.
PRINCIPLES FOR THE ALLOCATION OF FUNDING
To ensure that our PE & Sport Premium is spent in the most effective way the following principles have been agreed by the PE Subject leader together with the Headteacher:
✓ Provide high quality PE & Sport delivered by well-trained staff.
✓ Extend our range of school sports clubs
✓ Increase pupils’ participation in competitive sporting events (both intra and inter).
✓ Run a range of sports activities with other schools.
✓ Identify pupils who do not participate in sporting activities beyond the school day, and provide support and encouragement to enrol them in an activity of their choice.
✓ Monitor and evaluate spending of the Premium to demonstrate impact on outcomes for pupils.
✓ Pupil Parliament and Play Leaders to be actively involved in the decision-making and evaluation processes.
In September 2014 the decision was taken by the Vale Academy Trust to appoint a full-time Head of Primary PE to work across all school within the trust. Combined with the existing knowledge and experience of our PE co-ordinator (Sean Dineen), we are working hard to raise the profile of PE & Sport, on improving provision and in raising pupil participation in sporting activities.
The Primary Head of PE and Sport (Paul Chadwick) supports the delivery of PE and Sport across the Vale Academy Trust through a coaching model and works closely with the trust PE Co-coordinators.
At Thameside, we have been awarded the Bronze Games Award for two years in a row, which demonstrates our commitment to PE and Sport.
